Final Grade Calculator
Find the final exam score you need to reach your target overall grade, given your current grade and the exam weight. Runs in your browser.
If the required score is above 100%, the target is not reachable from the final alone. If it is below 0%, you have already secured the target. Schools use different grading scales, weightings, and rounding rules, so treat the result as an educational estimate and confirm it against your course syllabus or school policy.
A free final grade calculator that tells you the score you need on the final exam to reach a target overall grade. Enter the grade you have going into the exam, the overall grade you want, and how much the final is worth as a share of the course. The tool solves for the exam score that gets you to your goal. It is a fast way to see whether a target is realistic and how hard the final has to go. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is stored.

- Reality checkFind out quickly if a target grade is still possible from the final alone.
- Set a safe targetTry a lower target to see the score that comfortably secures a pass.
Examples
- Aiming for 90%With 85% going in and a final worth 40%, you need 97.5% on the final to finish at 90%.
- Out of reachWith 60% going in, a 90% target, and a final worth only 20%, the required score is above 100%, so it is not reachable from the final alone.
- Already securedIf the required score comes out below 0%, you have already locked in your target no matter the final.
Formula and how the calculation works
The final is one weighted piece of the course. If w is the final’s weight as a fraction, the rest of the course counts for (1 - w). Required final = (desired - current x (1 - w)) / w. Dividing by a small weight makes the required score rise quickly.
Inputs, outputs, and assumptions
You enter your current grade, your desired overall grade, and the final exam weight, all as percentages. The tool returns the final exam score you need. It assumes your current grade already reflects everything except the final, and that the final’s weight is correct.
Supported modes or scenarios
Change any input to explore scenarios: a higher target, a heavier or lighter final, or a different current grade. Results above 100% or below 0% are shown so you can see when a goal is impossible or already met.
Limitations and common mistakes
A common mistake is using the wrong weight, or a current grade that already includes the final. The tool assumes a single final worth a fixed share; it does not handle dropped scores, curves, or extra credit. Schools use different grading scales, weightings, and rounding rules, so treat the result as an educational estimate and confirm it against your course syllabus or school policy.
Privacy and local processing
The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your grades are never uploaded, stored, or shared, and refreshing the page starts fresh.
Frequently asked questions
What does the final exam weight mean?
It is the share of your overall course grade that the final is worth, as a percentage. A final worth 40% means the rest of the course counts for 60%.
Why is the required score above 100%?
It means the target is not reachable from the final alone, because the exam is not weighted heavily enough to close the gap.
What if it shows a negative number?
A negative required score means you have already secured your target grade regardless of the final.
Does it account for curves or extra credit?
No. It assumes a straightforward weighted grade. Curves, dropped scores, and extra credit are not included.
Is my data saved?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you enter is stored.
