Add Page Numbers to PDF

Add visible page numbers to a PDF, with your choice of format, position, and starting point. Runs in your browser.

The file is processed in your browser only and is never sent to a server.

Share toolWhatsApp

This tool draws visible page numbers onto a PDF and gives you a new file to download. You upload a PDF, choose how the number looks (just the number, "Page 1", "1 / 10", or "Page 1 of 10"), where it sits on the page, and which page to start from. You can also set the starting number, the font size, the margin, and the color. Everything runs in your browser: the file is never uploaded to a server, there is no sign-up, and there are no watermarks. The original file is left untouched.

When is this useful?

  • Before submitting a reportNumber the pages of a report or proposal so reviewers can reference "page 7" without confusion.
  • Before printingAdd page numbers before printing a guide or handout so a dropped stack is easy to reorder.
  • Contracts, worksheets, and guidesAdd clear numbering to a contract, worksheet, or manual so every page is accounted for.
  • Skip a cover pageLeave a title page unnumbered by starting from page 2, so numbering begins on the first content page.
03

Examples

  • Simple numbers, bottom centerKeep the defaults to get 1, 2, 3 … centered at the bottom of every page.
  • Page 1 of 10Choose the "Page 1 of 10" format to show the current page and the total on each page.
  • Start at 5 from page 2Skip the cover by starting from page 2 and set the starting number to 5, so page 2 shows 5.

Tips for a better result

  • Leave room with the marginIf existing content sits near the edge, increase the margin so the number does not overlap the page.
  • Match the number to the designUse gray instead of black, or a smaller font size, when you want the number to stay subtle.
  • Everything stays localYou can number sensitive documents too: the file never leaves your device.
  • What the tool does

The tool loads your PDF with the pdf-lib library, which runs in the browser, and draws a small text label on each selected page using a standard built-in font. Because the numbers are plain digits and Latin text, no custom font is needed. It saves a new PDF and never changes the file you uploaded. Nothing is sent to a server.

  • Choosing where numbering starts

Two controls work together: "start from page" decides which page gets the first number (set it to 2 to skip a cover), and "start numbering at" decides what that first number is. With the defaults, page 1 shows 1. In the "n / total" formats, the total is the last number shown.

  • Add page numbers vs. other PDF edits

Use Merge PDF to combine files into one before numbering, and Delete PDF Pages or Split PDF to remove or extract pages first, so the numbering matches the final document. If a scan is sideways, fix it with Rotate PDF before numbering. If the finished file is too large to send, run it through Compress PDF.

  • Privacy

The entire process happens on your device only. The file is not sent to a server, nothing is stored on our side, and no sign-up is required.

Frequently asked questions

Is the file uploaded to a server?

No. The numbering runs in your browser only. The file does not go to the internet and is not stored on our side.

Can I skip the cover page?

Yes. Set "start from page" to 2, and numbering begins on the second page while the cover stays clean.

Can I start numbering at a number other than 1?

Yes. Set "start numbering at" to any number, and the first numbered page uses it, counting up from there.

Will the number cover existing content?

It can if the margin is small and the page already has content near the edge. Increase the margin or change the position to avoid overlap.

Can I number an encrypted PDF?

A password-protected PDF may not load. It is best to remove the protection from the source first.

Is there a limit on file size?

Very large PDFs use more browser memory and may be slower or fail. For big files, try compressing first.
