Tips for a better result
- Check zero-rated and exempt items firstBasic food items, prescription drugs, and some agricultural inputs are zero-rated, and some services are exempt — this tool applies the standard rate you enter, so confirm the correct treatment for your item before relying on the result.
Formula and how the calculation works
VAT is a percentage of the price. To add VAT, multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate (for 12.5%, by 1.125). To take VAT out of a VAT-inclusive price, divide by that same figure to get the net, then subtract to find the tax. The VAT amount mode shows the rate applied to the net price.
Current VAT rate and official source
Trinidad and Tobago's standard VAT rate is 12.5%, administered by the Board of Inland Revenue (ird.gov.tt). Basic food items, prescription drugs, and certain agricultural inputs are zero-rated, and some services (for example financial and educational services) are exempt. The rate shown is current as of 2026. Tooleem is not affiliated with the Board of Inland Revenue. Rates and rules can change, so check the official source before you rely on a figure.
Supported modes and assumptions
The calculator has three modes: Add VAT (from a net price), Remove VAT (from a gross, VAT-inclusive price), and VAT amount (the tax on a net price). It applies one rate to the whole amount and does not split a mixed-rate invoice, and it does not determine whether a specific item is zero-rated or exempt.
