How to use this tool
- 01Choose a modeAdd VAT starts from a net (pre-tax) price. Remove VAT starts from a gross (VAT-inclusive) price. VAT amount shows the tax on a net price.
- 02Pick the rate and enter the amountSelect the VAT rate that applies (standard 18%, or one of the reduced rates), then type the amount. You can also enter a custom rate manually.
- 03Read net, VAT, and grossThe tool shows all three figures at once, so you can copy the net, the tax, or the VAT-inclusive price you need.
When is this useful?
- Invoices and quotesAdd VAT at the correct rate to a net amount to show the VAT-inclusive total, or work back to the taxable value from a gross figure.
- Tourism and hospitality pricingThe 7% reduced rate applies to tourist accommodation, so hospitality businesses can check the VAT-inclusive price for a room rate.
- Small business pricingSet a net price and see the VAT-inclusive figure to quote or display to customers.
Examples
- Add 18% VATA net price of €1,000 at the 18% standard rate becomes €1,180, with €180 VAT.
- Remove VATA gross price of €1,180 at 18% contains €1,180 ÷ 1.18 = €1,000 net, so the VAT is €180.
- Reduced rate (7%)On a net price of €200 for tourist accommodation at the 7% rate, the VAT is €14, for a gross of €214.
Formula and how the calculation works
VAT is a percentage of the price, and here you pick the rate first. To add VAT, multiply the net price by 1 plus the selected rate (for the 18% standard rate, by 1.18; for a 7% rate, by 1.07). To take VAT out of a VAT-inclusive price, divide by that same figure to get the net, then subtract to find the tax. The VAT amount mode shows the selected rate applied to the net price.
Current VAT rates and official source
Malta's standard VAT rate is 18%. Reduced rates apply to specific goods and services: 12% (for example short-term yacht hire and management of securities), 7% (tourist accommodation), 5% (printed books and e-books, medical equipment, electricity, and other specified goods), and 0% (intra-EU exports, international transport, and certain food and pharmaceuticals). VAT is administered by the Commissioner for Revenue under the Value Added Tax Act (Chapter 406 of the Laws of Malta). The rates shown are current as of 2026. Tooleem is not affiliated with the Commissioner for Revenue or the Malta Tax and Customs Administration. Rates and rules can change, so check the official source before you rely on a figure.
Supported modes and assumptions
The calculator has three modes: Add VAT (from a net price), Remove VAT (from a gross, VAT-inclusive price), and VAT amount (the tax on a net price). Pick the rate that applies to your goods or service; the tool does not decide the correct rate for you. You can also type any rate manually. It applies one rate to the whole amount and does not split a mixed-rate invoice.
