Tips for a better result
- Start low and increase graduallyIt is easier to add a bit more sharpening than to notice you have gone too far. Small increases usually look best.
- Watch for halosA bright or dark outline appearing along strong edges means the amount or radius is too high for that image. Back it off.
- Use a smaller radius for fine detail, a larger one for softer shapesA radius of 1 reacts to small, sharp edges like text or eyelashes. A radius of 3 to 5 reacts to broader shapes and textures.
- Sharpen after resizing, not beforeIf you also need to resize the image, resize first. Sharpening a large image and then shrinking it can wash the effect back out.
- A blurry photo has a limitSharpening enhances edges that already exist. It cannot invent detail that motion blur or an out-of-focus shot never captured.
How the sharpening works
The tool uses an unsharp mask, the same underlying idea used by professional photo editors. First it draws your image to a canvas and creates a blurred copy using a box blur at the radius you choose. Then, for every pixel, it computes the difference between the original and the blurred copy and adds a fraction of that difference (the amount you set) back onto the original. Since blurring removes fine detail and strong edges, the difference between the original and the blur highlights exactly those edges, so adding it back makes them more pronounced. The alpha (transparency) channel is left untouched, so transparent PNGs keep clean edges.
Privacy
The image never leaves your device. There is no upload, no server processing, and no storage. Everything, from decoding the file to building the blurred copy to encoding the final PNG, JPG, or WebP, runs in your browser using the canvas API.
Limitations
This is a sharpening filter, not an AI restoration tool. It works by enhancing edges that already exist in the image; it cannot recover detail that motion blur, an out-of-focus shot, or a low-resolution source never captured. It is not a face-restoration tool and it is not a professional forensic enhancement tool: it will not reconstruct a face or license plate from an unreadable source. Pushing the amount or radius too high can introduce visible halos (bright or dark outlines) around edges, or make flat areas look noisy, so more is not always better. Very large images are automatically scaled down to a safe working size before processing to keep the browser responsive.
Frequently asked questions
Will this fix a very blurry or out-of-focus photo?
It can improve a photo that is only slightly soft, but it cannot fully fix a photo that is heavily out of focus or has strong motion blur. Sharpening enhances edges that are already there; it does not invent detail that was never captured.
Is this an AI tool?
No. It uses a deterministic unsharp-mask filter (blur, then add back the difference), the same classic technique used by photo editors for decades. There is no AI model, no face reconstruction, and no guesswork about what should be in the image.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The sharpening happens entirely in your browser using the canvas API. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is stored.
What is the difference between amount and radius?
Amount controls how strong the sharpening effect is overall. Radius controls the size of detail it reacts to: a small radius sharpens fine texture and thin edges, while a larger radius reacts to broader shapes.
Why does my image look like it has outlines now?
That is a halo, a common sign that the amount or radius is too high for that particular photo. Lower one or both settings until the outlines disappear.
Which output formats are supported?
PNG, JPG, and WebP. PNG keeps transparency; JPG and WebP let you set a quality level to balance sharpness against file size.
Does it work on very large images?
Yes, but very large images are automatically scaled down to a safe working size before processing so the sharpening stays fast and the browser does not freeze.
