A free area unit converter that runs entirely in your browser. Enter a value, pick a source unit and a target unit, and get an instant result. Nine units are supported: square millimeter (mm²), square centimeter (cm²), square meter (m²), square kilometer (km²), dunam (1,000 m², the metric unit used in Israel and parts of the Eastern Mediterranean), hectare (10,000 m²), acre (about 4,046.86 m²), square foot (US ft²), and square yard (US yd²). The tool keeps metric units (m², km², hectare, dunam) and imperial units (acre, ft², yd²) clearly labeled so there is no ambiguity when you read a foreign real estate listing or a land document. Use it for everyday conversions: comparing land sizes, planning a room or a garden, reading property listings in a unit you are not used to, or checking homework. It is not real estate advice, does not appraise property value, does not calculate any tax, and is not a survey or permit. For official information about a property, consult the source documents or a licensed professional. Everything runs locally: the value you type, the units you pick, and the result are never stored and never sent to a server. Refreshing the page resets everything. Last updated: May 2026.

How to use this tool

  1. 01Enter a valueType a number into the "Value to convert" field. Decimals are allowed (for example 1.5 or 0.25), and zero is allowed. Negative values do not make sense for area, so the tool shows a short note instead of a result.
  2. 02Pick the unitsChoose a source unit (From unit) and a target unit (To unit). You can flip them with a single click on "Swap". The result updates immediately on every change.
  3. 03Use the common conversionsSix ready presets let you jump straight to a frequent conversion such as 1 hectare to m², 1 km² to m², 1 acre to m², or 1 m² to ft². Clicking a preset fills both the value and the units at once.
  4. 04See the value in every unitBelow the result, a reference table shows your input expressed in all nine units at the same time. Handy for cross-checking a listing or comparing sizes side by side.
  5. 05Copy the resultThe "Copy result" button copies a short summary line (for example "1 acre = 4,046.86 square meters") that you can paste anywhere. There is no print or download.

When is this useful?

  • Reading a real estate or land listingA listing gives the area in square feet or acres, but you think in square meters. Convert quickly to m² (and to hectare for larger plots) to understand the size in a unit you know. The tool does not replace the official property documents.
  • Comparing land sizesCheck whether 2.5 acres is larger or smaller than 10,000 m², or how a hectare compares to an acre. The tool shows the answer instantly so you can compare plots described in different units.
  • Flooring and roomsYou are planning tiles for a 15 m² room but the product spec is in square feet. Convert 15 m² to ft² to read the spec, or convert a room measured in ft² back to m² to estimate materials.
  • Gardening and outdoor projectsPlanning a lawn or a garden of 80 m² and the seed or fertilizer coverage is listed per square foot or per acre. Convert the area to the unit on the package so the coverage math is straightforward.
  • Homework and geographyA geography or math exercise asks you to convert the area of a region from square kilometers to hectares or square meters. The tool does the conversion in one click and shows the constants it uses.

Examples

  • Square meters and square feet1 m² = 10.7639 ft² (about 10.76 ft²). 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² (exact). So 100 m² ≈ 1,076.39 ft², and 1,000 ft² ≈ 92.9 m².
  • Acres and hectares1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m² (exact, international acre) = 0.404686 hectare. 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.471 acres. So 5 acres ≈ 2.02 hectares.
  • Metric units1 m² = 10,000 cm² = 1,000,000 mm². 1 km² = 1,000,000 m² = 100 hectares. 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 10 dunam. 1 dunam = 1,000 m².
  • Imperial units (US)1 yd² = 9 ft² (exact) = 0.83612736 m². 1 acre = 4,840 yd² = 43,560 ft². The US chain is internally consistent.

Tips for a better result

  • Acres and hectares are not the sameAn acre (about 4,046.86 m²) is roughly 0.4 of a hectare (10,000 m²). When a listing mixes the two, convert both to m² so you compare like with like.
  • This tool uses the international acreThere are a few definitions of the acre. This tool uses the international acre = 4,046.8564224 m² (exact). It matches the US survey acre to ordinary precision (a difference of about one part in ten million).
  • The official unit is in the documentsFor any registration, sale, or permit, the unit that counts is the one written in the source documents, not a conversion you do from a listing. Use this tool for orientation only.
  • Your value stays with youThe value you enter stays on your device. It is not sent to a network and not stored. Your choice of source and target unit is not shared with any server either.
  • Metric vs imperial area units

Metric area units scale by powers of ten: 1 m² = 10,000 cm² = 1,000,000 mm², and 1 km² = 1,000,000 m². The hectare (10,000 m²) and the dunam (1,000 m²) are convenient metric land units. Imperial units come from linear feet and yards: 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² (exact), 1 yd² = 9 ft², and 1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,046.8564224 m². Because acres do not divide neatly into square meters, conversions between the two systems are rarely round numbers, which is exactly why a converter helps.

  • Common conversions

The conversions people look up most often: square meters to square feet (multiply by 10.7639), square feet to square meters (multiply by 0.09290304), acres to hectares (multiply by 0.404686), hectares to acres (multiply by 2.471), km² to m² (multiply by 1,000,000), and square yards to square meters (multiply by 0.83612736). The tool computes all of these and shows the value in every supported unit at once.

  • What a hectare and a dunam are

A hectare is 10,000 m², equal to a square 100 m on each side, and is widely used for farmland and forestry. A dunam is 1,000 m², the metric land unit used in Israel and parts of the Eastern Mediterranean; ten dunam make one hectare. Both are metric, so converting between them and the square meter is exact and simple. Historical dunam definitions (such as the Ottoman dunam of about 919 m²) differ and are not used here; this tool uses the modern metric dunam of 1,000 m² only.

  • Common area conversions

These are the area conversions people search for most, with the constants this tool uses. Square meters and square feet: 1 m² = 10.7639 ft², and 1 ft² = 0.092903 m². Square meters and square yards: 1 m² = 1.19599 yd², and 1 yd² = 0.836127 m². Acres and hectares: 1 acre = 0.404686 hectare, and 1 hectare = 2.47105 acres. Acres and square meters: 1 acre = 4,046.86 m². Hectares and square meters: 1 hectare = 10,000 m². Square kilometers and square meters: 1 km² = 1,000,000 m². Square centimeters and square meters: 1 m² = 10,000 cm². Dunam and square meters: 1 dunam = 1,000 m² (the dunam is a metric land unit of 1,000 m² used in several countries; ten dunam make one hectare).
