How to use this tool

When is this useful?

  • An American baking recipeA recipe asks for 2 cups of flour. If the recipe is American, that is 2 × 236.59 ≈ 473 mL. If you read it as a 250 mL cup instead, you get about 500 mL, which can change the texture. The converter keeps both cup sizes separate so you can match the recipe.
  • Shipping billed by the gallonAn American site lists pack volume in fl oz or gallons. Convert quickly to liters and mL to match the billing to the real quantity and to the space you have for storage.
  • A physics or chemistry exerciseA problem gives a volume in cm³ or m³. Convert to mL and liters without mixing up the scales: 1 cm³ = 1 mL and 1 m³ = 1,000 liters.

Tips for a better result

  • A "standard" cup is not one fixed sizeA typical kitchen cup varies by country, often 240-250 mL. This tool offers a "metric cup" (exactly 250 mL) and a "US cup" (236.59 mL) as separate options. When a recipe does not say which cup it means, convert by context: American recipe → US cup; European recipe → metric cup.
  • Gallon: US is not imperialIn this tool a "gallon" is always a US gallon (3,785.41 mL). The imperial gallon (~4,546 mL) is different and is not supported. If your source gives an imperial gallon, adjust manually.
  • The unit is exact, the cup in your hand is notThe result is mathematically exact, but the real volume also depends on your measuring tools. A "standard" home cup can actually be 220 mL or 260 mL. For sensitive recipes it is worth using a marked measuring cup.
  • Your value stays with youThe value you enter stays only on your device. It is never sent over the network and never stored. Your choice of source and target unit is not shared with any server either.

    Every unit is first converted to mL (the base unit) and then to the mL of the target unit. The defined constants are: 1 liter = 1,000 mL; 1 cm³ = 1 mL; 1 m³ = 1,000,000 mL; 1 metric cup = 250 mL; 1 US teaspoon = 4.92892159375 mL; 1 US tablespoon = 14.78676478125 mL; 1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735295625 mL; 1 US cup = 236.5882365 mL; 1 US gallon = 3,785.411784 mL. All US constants derive from the standard fluid-ounce definition and are consistent with each other (teaspoon = 1/6 fl oz, tablespoon = 3 teaspoons, cup = 8 fl oz, gallon = 128 fl oz). The metric constants are powers of ten. The calculation does no internal rounding; only the final display trims unnecessary digits.

  • Metric vs US customary volume

    Metric volume (mL, liter, cm³, m³) is built on powers of ten, which makes conversions clean: 1 cm³ = 1 mL and 1 m³ = 1,000 liters. US customary volume chains from the fluid ounce: a US cup is 8 fl oz, a US gallon is 128 fl oz. Two pitfalls trip people up. First, the US cup (236.59 mL) and the international metric cup (250 mL) are different, so this tool exposes both. Second, the US gallon (3,785 mL) and the imperial gallon (~4,546 mL) are different; this tool uses the US gallon only. If your source uses imperial or another national system, convert with care.

How many mL in a liter?

Exactly 1,000 mL in 1 liter. So 0.5 liter = 500 mL, 2 liters = 2,000 mL, and to go from mL back to liters divide by 1,000 (1 mL = 0.001 liter).

How many liters in a US gallon?

1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liters, about 3.785 L. This is the US gallon, not the imperial gallon. To go the other way, 1 liter ≈ 0.264 US gallons.

How many mL in a US cup?

A US cup is 236.5882365 mL, about 236.6 mL. Note that a metric cup is 250 mL, so the two are not interchangeable. Pick the cup your recipe actually uses.

How many mL in a tablespoon?

A US tablespoon is 14.78676478125 mL, about 14.79 mL (3 US teaspoons). A US teaspoon is 4.92892159375 mL, about 4.93 mL. A rounded kitchen spoon of 15 mL / 5 mL is close enough for most cooking.

Is this a US or imperial gallon?
