A free volume converter that runs entirely in your browser. Type a value, pick a from-unit and a to-unit, and the result updates instantly. Ten units are supported: milliliter (mL), liter, cubic centimeter (cm³), cubic meter (m³), teaspoon, tablespoon, metric cup (250 mL), US cup (236.5882365 mL), US fluid ounce (fl oz), and US gallon. The tool deliberately keeps the metric cup and the US cup as separate units, because they hold different amounts and that gap is sometimes the difference between a recipe that works and one that turns out dry. The gallon and fluid ounce here are US definitions only, not imperial. Use it for schoolwork, baking and cooking recipes, shipping and packaging math, and general science or technical conversions. It is not medical advice, does not give medication dosing, does not recommend a daily amount to drink, and does not provide safety instructions for hazardous materials. Everything happens in the browser: the value, the units, and the result are never stored and never sent to any server. Refreshing the page resets everything. Last updated: May 2026.

How to use this tool

  1. 01Enter a valueType a number into the "Value to convert" field. Decimals are allowed (for example 2.5 or 0.75) and zero is allowed. Negative values do not make sense for volume, so an explanatory message appears instead of a result.
  2. 02Pick the unitsChoose a from-unit (default: liter) and a to-unit (default: milliliter). One click on "Swap" reverses them. The result updates immediately on every change.
  3. 03Use the common conversionsSix conversions are ready to go: 1 liter to mL, 1 metric cup to mL, 1 US cup to mL, 1 tablespoon to mL, 1 teaspoon to mL, and 1 US gallon to liters. Tapping a preset fills both the value and the units at once.
  4. 04See the value in every unitBelow the result is a reference table that shows the entered value in all ten units at the same time. Handy for a cross-check or for reading a third unit without changing your selection.
  5. 05Copy the resultThe "Copy result" button copies a short summary line (for example "1 liter = 1,000 milliliter") that you can paste anywhere. There is no print or download button.

When is this useful?

  • An American baking recipeA recipe asks for 2 cups of flour. If the recipe is American, that is 2 × 236.59 ≈ 473 mL. If you read it as a 250 mL cup instead, you get about 500 mL, which can change the texture. The converter keeps both cup sizes separate so you can match the recipe.
  • Shipping billed by the gallonAn American site lists pack volume in fl oz or gallons. Convert quickly to liters and mL to match the billing to the real quantity and to the space you have for storage.
  • A physics or chemistry exerciseA problem gives a volume in cm³ or m³. Convert to mL and liters without mixing up the scales: 1 cm³ = 1 mL and 1 m³ = 1,000 liters.
  • A recipe written in tablespoons and teaspoonsA recipe calls for 3 tablespoons of oil. This tool uses the standard US values: 1 tablespoon ≈ 14.79 mL and 1 teaspoon ≈ 4.93 mL. The gap from a rounded 15 mL / 5 mL kitchen spoon is small and usually negligible.
  • Packaging and fulfillment planningCheck pack volume in different units before ordering boxes. Convert between mL, liters, cm³, and m³ in one click to plan capacity correctly.

Examples

  • Simple metric units1 liter = 1,000 mL. 1 cm³ = 1 mL (exact). 1 m³ = 1,000,000 mL = 1,000 liters.
  • Cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons (US)1 US cup = 8 fl oz = 16 tablespoons (US) = 48 teaspoons (US) = 236.5882365 mL. Likewise 1 tablespoon (US) = 3 teaspoons (US) = 14.78676478125 mL and 1 teaspoon (US) = 4.92892159375 mL. A US cup is about 236.6 mL.
  • Metric cup vs US cupMetric cup = 250 mL (exact, international standard). US cup = 236.5882365 mL (exact). The gap (~13.4 mL) sounds tiny, but across 3-4 cups it adds up to 40-50 mL, roughly half an extra cup.
  • Gallon and fluid ounce (US)1 US gallon = 128 fluid ounces = 16 cups (US) = 3,785.411784 mL ≈ 3.785 liters. 1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735295625 mL, so 1 liter ≈ 33.8 fl oz (US).

Tips for a better result

  • A "standard" cup is not one fixed sizeA typical kitchen cup varies by country, often 240-250 mL. This tool offers a "metric cup" (exactly 250 mL) and a "US cup" (236.59 mL) as separate options. When a recipe does not say which cup it means, convert by context: American recipe → US cup; European recipe → metric cup.
  • Gallon: US is not imperialIn this tool a "gallon" is always a US gallon (3,785.41 mL). The imperial gallon (~4,546 mL) is different and is not supported. If your source gives an imperial gallon, adjust manually.
  • The unit is exact, the cup in your hand is notThe result is mathematically exact, but the real volume also depends on your measuring tools. A "standard" home cup can actually be 220 mL or 260 mL. For sensitive recipes it is worth using a marked measuring cup.
  • Your value stays with youThe value you enter stays only on your device. It is never sent over the network and never stored. Your choice of source and target unit is not shared with any server either.
  • How the calculation works

Every unit is first converted to mL (the base unit) and then to the mL of the target unit. The defined constants are: 1 liter = 1,000 mL; 1 cm³ = 1 mL; 1 m³ = 1,000,000 mL; 1 metric cup = 250 mL; 1 US teaspoon = 4.92892159375 mL; 1 US tablespoon = 14.78676478125 mL; 1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735295625 mL; 1 US cup = 236.5882365 mL; 1 US gallon = 3,785.411784 mL. All US constants derive from the standard fluid-ounce definition and are consistent with each other (teaspoon = 1/6 fl oz, tablespoon = 3 teaspoons, cup = 8 fl oz, gallon = 128 fl oz). The metric constants are powers of ten. The calculation does no internal rounding; only the final display trims unnecessary digits.

  • Metric vs US customary volume

Metric volume (mL, liter, cm³, m³) is built on powers of ten, which makes conversions clean: 1 cm³ = 1 mL and 1 m³ = 1,000 liters. US customary volume chains from the fluid ounce: a US cup is 8 fl oz, a US gallon is 128 fl oz. Two pitfalls trip people up. First, the US cup (236.59 mL) and the international metric cup (250 mL) are different, so this tool exposes both. Second, the US gallon (3,785 mL) and the imperial gallon (~4,546 mL) are different; this tool uses the US gallon only. If your source uses imperial or another national system, convert with care.

  • Common conversions

A few that come up often: 1 liter ≈ 33.8 US fluid ounces; 1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 liters; 1 US cup ≈ 236.6 mL; 1 tablespoon ≈ 14.79 mL; 1 teaspoon ≈ 4.93 mL; 1 cubic meter = 1,000 liters. For the reverse direction: 1 gallon to liters is 3.785, and to go from liters to gallons divide by 3.785 (1 liter ≈ 0.264 US gallons). To read mL to cups, divide by 236.6 for a US cup or by 250 for a metric cup.

  • Common volume conversions

Reference values for every supported pair. Metric: 1 liter = 1,000 mL; 1 mL = 0.001 liter; 1 cm³ = 1 mL (exact); 1 m³ = 1,000 liters = 1,000,000 mL. US customary (these are US definitions, not imperial): 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liters ≈ 3.785 L (1 liter ≈ 0.264 US gallons); 1 US cup = 236.5882365 mL ≈ 236.6 mL; the metric cup is 250 mL exactly, so a US cup and a metric cup are NOT the same; 1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735295625 mL ≈ 29.57 mL (1 liter ≈ 33.8 US fl oz); 1 US tablespoon = 14.78676478125 mL ≈ 14.79 mL; 1 US teaspoon = 4.92892159375 mL ≈ 4.93 mL. Note the cup, tablespoon, teaspoon, fluid ounce, and gallon here are all US units (with a separate metric cup); the imperial gallon (~4,546 mL) is not used.

Frequently asked questions

How many mL in a liter?

Exactly 1,000 mL in 1 liter. So 0.5 liter = 500 mL, 2 liters = 2,000 mL, and to go from mL back to liters divide by 1,000 (1 mL = 0.001 liter).

How many liters in a US gallon?

1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liters, about 3.785 L. This is the US gallon, not the imperial gallon. To go the other way, 1 liter ≈ 0.264 US gallons.

How many mL in a US cup?

A US cup is 236.5882365 mL, about 236.6 mL. Note that a metric cup is 250 mL, so the two are not interchangeable. Pick the cup your recipe actually uses.

How many mL in a tablespoon?

A US tablespoon is 14.78676478125 mL, about 14.79 mL (3 US teaspoons). A US teaspoon is 4.92892159375 mL, about 4.93 mL. A rounded kitchen spoon of 15 mL / 5 mL is close enough for most cooking.

Is this a US or imperial gallon?

US. The gallon here is always the US gallon (3.785 liters). The imperial gallon (~4,546 mL) is larger and is not supported, so if your source is imperial, convert it manually. The cup, tablespoon, teaspoon, and fluid ounce are also US (alongside a separate metric cup).

What is a volume converter?

A tool that takes a volume value in one unit (mL, liter, cup, tablespoon, and so on) and returns the same amount in another unit. The calculation is instant and runs only in your browser.

How do I convert liters to gallons?

1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liters, so to convert liters to gallons divide by about 3.785 (1 liter ≈ 0.264 US gallons). To go from gallons to liters, multiply by 3.785. Just pick "liter" as the from-unit and "US gallon" as the to-unit, or use the preset.

How do I convert mL to cups?

It depends on which cup. For a US cup, divide mL by 236.59 (so 250 mL ≈ 1.06 US cups). For a metric cup, divide by 250 (so 250 mL = exactly 1 metric cup). The converter keeps both, so choose the one your recipe uses.

What is the difference between a metric cup and a US cup?

A metric cup = 250 mL exactly. A US cup = 236.5882365 mL exactly. The gap is about 13.4 mL per cup. Across 3-4 cups that adds up to 40-50 mL, which matters in sensitive recipes such as baked goods.

Is the gallon here US or imperial?

US gallon only (3,785.411784 mL ≈ 3.785 liters). The imperial gallon (~4,546 mL) is different and is not supported. If your source gives an imperial gallon, convert it manually.

Is a fluid ounce the same as a regular (weight) ounce?

No. A fluid ounce is a unit of volume (~29.57 mL in the US). A regular ounce (avoirdupois) is a unit of weight (~28.35 grams). The names are similar but the units are completely different. For weight there is a separate tool.

How precise are the results?

The constants are exact and the calculation does no internal rounding, so the math is precise. Only the display trims trailing digits for readability. Real-world accuracy still depends on your measuring tools.

Is anything I type uploaded or saved?

No. The whole calculation runs in your browser. The value, the units, and the result are not stored in localStorage, not sent to a server, and not passed to analytics.
