How to Remove VAT or GST from a Gross Price: Divisor Table

Why taking the rate off a gross price is wrong, the divisor and VAT-fraction methods, a divisor table from 5% to 27%, worked examples in six countries and invoice rounding.

By TooleemPublished Facts checked

Short answer

To remove VAT or GST from a price that includes it, divide by (1 + rate): at 20%, divide by 1.20; at 15%, by 1.15. The tax is the gross price minus that result, or the gross price × rate ÷ (100 + rate), which is 1/6 at 20% and 3/23 at 15%. Do not multiply by (1 − rate): taking 20% off a £59.99 gross price gives £47.99, but the real net price is £49.99, so the VAT is £10.00, not £12.00.

Why subtracting the rate is wrong

VAT is charged as a percentage of the net price. Once it is added, the gross price is 100% + rate of the net price, so the tax is a smaller share of the gross than the headline rate. HMRC uses this example: an item sold for £2.40 including 20% VAT contains 40p of VAT, which is one-sixth of £2.40, not 20% of it.

MethodCalculationNet priceVAT
Divide by 1.20 (correct)59.99 ÷ 1.20£49.99£10.00
VAT fraction 1/6 (correct)59.99 × 20 ÷ 120£49.99£10.00
Take 20% off (wrong)59.99 × 0.80£47.99£12.00

The divisor method

Net price

net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Tax included in a gross price

tax = gross × rate ÷ (100 + rate)

Both give the same answer; the second is what tax authorities call the VAT fraction. Check your result by going forwards: net × (1 + rate) should give back the gross price, to the cent.

Worked example

Canada: one rate per province

In Ontario the HST is 13%, so C$56.50 including HST is C$56.50 ÷ 1.13 = C$50.00 plus C$6.50 of HST. In Alberta only the 5% GST applies, so the same C$56.50 is C$53.81 plus C$2.69. Use the rate of the province where the supply is made.

Reduced rates work the same way: 13.5% in Ireland means dividing by 1.135, and 7% in Germany means dividing by 1.07. Use the rate that applies to the specific item, not the standard rate.

Rounding on invoices

  • Work out the tax on the total of each rate band where you can, then round once. Rounding every line and adding can drift by a cent or two from the tax on the total.
  • In the UK, HMRC lets invoice traders round the total VAT on an invoice down to a whole penny, and sets out how to round line-by-line amounts (VAT Notice 700, section 17.5). Retailers follow separate rules.
  • Other countries have their own rounding rules; when the amounts are for a tax return, follow the guidance of the tax authority where you are registered.
