Examples

  • A single dinerBill $50, 20% tip, 1 person: tip is $10, total is $60.
  • Splitting between friendsBill $100, 20% tip, split 4 ways: tip is $20 ($5 each), total is $120 ($30 each).
  • A generous or round-up tipBill $20, 100% tip, 1 person: tip is $20, total is $40 — useful for rounding up small orders or tipping extra generously.
04

How the calculation works

The tip amount is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage. The total is the bill plus the tip. When splitting between multiple people, both the tip and the total are divided evenly by the number of people.

05

Inputs, outputs, and assumptions

Enter a bill amount greater than 0, a tip percentage of 0 or more, and at least 1 person. The calculator returns the tip amount, the total (bill plus tip), and the per-person tip and total. Splitting is always even — this calculator does not currently support uneven shares (for that, see the split bill calculator).

06

How much should I tip?

Tipping norms vary by country, type of service, and local custom. In the United States, 15-20% is a common range at sit-down restaurants; other countries and contexts (counter service, regions where tipping is not customary, or where a service charge is already included) differ widely. This calculator performs the arithmetic only — it does not recommend a specific percentage, since the "right" tip depends entirely on where you are and local norms.

07

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage (as a decimal). For example, a $50 bill at 20% is 50 × 0.20 = $10.

Does this split the bill evenly or can people pay different amounts?

This calculator splits both the bill and tip evenly across everyone. For uneven splits (for example, if people ordered different amounts), use the split bill calculator instead.

What is a normal tip percentage?

It depends heavily on where you are and the type of service — this varies too much by country and context for a single universal answer. This calculator handles the math for whatever percentage applies to your situation.

Can I enter a tip over 100%?

Yes. There is no upper limit, useful for rounding up a small bill or tipping extra generously.

Is my data saved?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
