Calculation happens in two steps. First, the sun's exact position in the sky is computed throughout the day, from the date and your latitude/longitude. Then, each halachic zman is defined either by a solar depression angle (e.g. 16.1° below the horizon for Alot HaShachar) or by "shaos zmaniyos" (proportional hours, not regular hours), following the documented halachic source for that zman.

Zmanim like Sof Zman Shema and Sof Zman Tefillah are calculated using "shaos zmaniyos" — the halachic day divided into 12 equal parts. Per the GRA, the day runs from sunrise to sunset. Per the Magen Avraham, the day starts at Alot HaShachar and ends at Tzeit HaKochavim (here, the fixed-72-minute version), making the day — and each proportional hour — longer. Both methods are shown separately, never merged into one answer.

Alot HaShachar is calculated here at 16.1° below the horizon. Misheyakir, the time one can recognize an acquaintance at a distance, is shown in two versions: 11.5° (the more commonly published value) and 10.2° (the stricter opinion). Tzeit HaKochavim is shown both at 8.5° (3 small stars) and at a fixed 72 minutes after sunset.

Your location is used only in your browser to calculate the times — it's never sent to a server or stored. Choosing a city from the list also stays on your device only.

Why are there two methods for Sof Zman Shema?

Because there's a real halachic dispute about when the halachic day begins and ends. The GRA holds the day runs sunrise-to-sunset; the Magen Avraham holds it runs Alot-to-Tzeit. The tool shows both methods separately.

Does this tool replace a halachic ruling?

No. It gives an astronomical-halachic calculation based on published, documented methods. For sensitive matters, especially if you follow a specific community custom, verify with a rabbi or posek.

Do I need to share my location to use this?

No. You can also pick a city from the list without granting the browser access to your device's location.

Is my location saved or sent to a server?

No. All calculation happens in your browser only. Your location is never sent to a server and never stored.

Are the times accurate for anywhere in the world?

Times are calculated from your exact latitude/longitude and date, so they fit any location. At very high latitudes, in some seasons a particular zman may not display, because the sun doesn't reach the required angle that day.
