Road Trip Fuel Cost Calculator

Estimate the fuel a road trip needs and what it costs from your own distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price. Works in km or miles, with L/100km, km/L, or MPG, a round-trip toggle, and a per-person split. Runs in your browser, no live fuel prices.

The road trip fuel cost calculator estimates how much fuel a drive needs and what it costs, using only the numbers you enter. Pick kilometres or miles, enter the trip distance, choose how your fuel efficiency is measured (L/100km, km/L, or MPG), and add your own fuel price per litre or per gallon. Turn on the round-trip toggle to double the distance, split the cost across the people in the car, and add more than one vehicle for a convoy. The tool returns the fuel needed, the total fuel cost, the cost per person, and the cost per kilometre or mile. It runs entirely in your browser: there are no live fuel prices, no bundled per-country data, and nothing is uploaded or saved. It is a planning estimate based on steady, real-world driving, so the result is only as accurate as the efficiency and price you provide.

How to use this tool

  1. 01Enter the distance and unitType the one-way distance and choose kilometres or miles. Use the round-trip toggle to count the return leg automatically.
  2. 02Set your fuel efficiencyChoose how your car reports economy: L/100km (lower is better), km/L, or MPG (higher is better), then enter the number from your dashboard or manual.
  3. 03Enter your fuel priceType the price you actually pay per litre (for L/100km and km/L) or per gallon (for MPG). The tool never fetches live prices, so the figure is always yours.
  4. 04Split and scaleSet how many people share the cost and how many vehicles are driving the route. The total fuel scales with vehicles; the per-person cost divides by people.
  5. 05Read and copy the resultSee the fuel needed, total cost, cost per person, and cost per distance unit. Copy a plain-text summary to share with the group.

When is this useful?

  • Planning a weekend road tripEstimate the fuel bill before you leave so you can fold it into the trip budget and know what each passenger chips in.
  • Comparing two routesRun the shorter motorway route against a longer scenic one to see how much extra fuel the detour really costs.
  • Sharing a liftSplit the cost fairly between everyone in the car, so a carpool or ride-share among friends has a clear number.
  • A multi-car convoyAdd several vehicles to estimate the combined fuel for a group heading to the same place.

Examples

  • 600 km round trip at 7 L/100kmA 600 km each-way drive with round trip on is 1,200 km. At 7 L/100km that is 84 litres. At 1.90 per litre the fuel is about 159.60, or roughly 40 per person for four.
  • 300 miles at 30 MPGSwitch to miles and MPG: 300 miles at 30 MPG needs 10 gallons. At 3.50 per gallon the drive costs about 35.
  • 300 km at 15 km/LUsing km/L: 300 km at 15 km/L is 20 litres. At 1.50 per litre that is 30 for the leg.
  • Two cars, same routeA 100 km run at 10 L/100km is 10 litres per car. Set vehicles to 2 and the tool totals 20 litres for the pair.
04

Tips for a better result

  • Use your real-world economyOfficial figures are optimistic. If your dashboard shows a higher L/100km or a lower MPG on your usual roads, use that number for a truer estimate.
  • Match the price to the efficiency unitFor L/100km and km/L enter a price per litre. For MPG enter a price per gallon. Mixing them will skew the total.
  • Add a little for hills and trafficFuel use climbs with elevation, headwinds, roof boxes, and stop-start traffic. If your route has plenty of those, nudge the efficiency figure up.
  • This is fuel onlyTolls, parking, and charging are not included. Add them separately in the travel budget calculator for the full picture.
05

How the calculation works

The tool first applies the round-trip toggle (doubling the distance) and multiplies by the number of vehicles to get the total distance driven. For L/100km it converts the distance to kilometres and multiplies distance divided by 100 by the efficiency figure. For km/L it divides the kilometres by the efficiency. For MPG it converts the distance to miles and divides by the efficiency to get gallons. The fuel needed is multiplied by your price to get the total cost, which is then divided by the number of people for the per-person figure and by the total distance for the cost per kilometre or mile.

06

Inputs, outputs, and assumptions

Inputs are the distance and its unit, the efficiency mode and value, your fuel price, a round-trip toggle, the number of people, and the number of vehicles. Outputs are the fuel needed (litres or gallons), the total fuel cost, the cost per person, and the cost per distance unit. The core assumption is steady real-world consumption at the efficiency you enter. The tool does not model elevation, weather, load, driving style, or idling, and it does not include tolls, parking, or EV charging.

07

Supported units and modes

Distance can be entered in kilometres or miles, and the two are converted using the exact factor of 1.609344 kilometres per mile. Efficiency can be given as L/100km or km/L for litre-priced fuel, or as MPG for gallon-priced fuel. You can split the cost across up to 50 people and scale the fuel across up to 50 vehicles, which makes it work for a single car or a whole convoy.

08

Limitations and common mistakes

The most common mistake is a price and efficiency mismatch, such as an MPG figure with a per-litre price. Another is using an official economy number that your car never actually hits. The tool cannot know local pump prices, so it makes no average-price claims and asks you to enter the price you pay. For electric vehicles the litre and gallon model does not apply, so treat any EV result as a rough analogue only.

09

Privacy

Everything runs in your browser. The distance, efficiency, price, and results are not uploaded, not saved to storage, and not sent to analytics beyond a general usage signal. There are no live network calls for fuel prices, and refreshing the page clears everything.

10

Frequently asked questions

Does it use live or local fuel prices?

No. There are no live prices and no bundled per-country fuel data. You enter the price you actually pay, so the estimate reflects your real cost.

Which price should I enter, per litre or per gallon?

Enter a price per litre when your efficiency is in L/100km or km/L, and a price per gallon when it is in MPG. The tool follows the unit you chose.

How do I split the cost with passengers?

Set the number of people sharing the drive. The tool divides the total fuel cost by that number to show the cost per person.

Can I estimate a round trip?

Yes. Turn on the round-trip toggle and the distance is doubled automatically before the fuel and cost are calculated.

Does it include tolls, parking, or charging?

No. This estimate is fuel only. Add tolls, parking, and any other costs separately, for example in the travel budget calculator.

Is my data saved?

No. The tool runs in your browser and stores nothing. Your inputs and results disappear when you refresh the page.
