What EXIF actually contains
EXIF is a block of structured data written into the file alongside the pixels. It typically records the camera make and model, lens, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, orientation, the date and time of capture, and the software that last wrote the file. If the device had location services enabled for the camera, it also records latitude and longitude, often to within a few metres, and sometimes altitude and compass heading. None of this is visible when you look at the image, and all of it survives being emailed, attached or uploaded unless something deliberately removes it.
How this removal works, and its honest limits
The tool loads the image, draws it onto a canvas and exports a new file from those pixels. Because the export is generated from the decoded image rather than copied from the original bytes, the metadata block is not carried across — which is what removes it. The trade-off is that the file is genuinely re-encoded: for JPEG that means recompression at the quality you select, so the output is not bit-identical to the input even though it looks the same. That is a real cost and worth knowing about, particularly if you are working from an already heavily compressed image. Behaviour can also vary slightly between browsers, since the export is done by the browser's own encoder.
What it deliberately does not do
It does not blur faces, detect people or objects, or alter the visible content in any way — the picture still shows exactly what it showed. It is not a forensic tool and does not promise anonymity: an image can identify a place or a person through its content alone, and no metadata stripper addresses that. Why doing this locally is the point
Most metadata removers work by uploading your file to a server, stripping it there and sending back the result. Consider what that means for the specific case people usually have in mind: you are worried the photo reveals where you live, so you send it — coordinates intact — to a server you know nothing about, which may retain it for hours. Doing the work in the browser removes that step entirely. There is no upload, no copy on anyone else's disk, and closing the tab ends it.
