Chargeable Weight Calculator

Find the chargeable (billable) weight (the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight) with metric or imperial units. Runs in your browser.

Common values:
Chargeable weight
4.8kg
Volumetric weight: 4.80 kgBilled by: volumetric weight

Carriers bill whichever is greater. Educational estimate, not a carrier quote.

A free chargeable weight calculator that runs entirely in your browser. Carriers bill the chargeable (billable) weight (the greater of your parcel’s actual weight and its volumetric weight) so a light but bulky box still pays for the space it uses. Enter the actual weight and the box dimensions, choose a divisor (5000 or 6000 cm³/kg, or 139 / 166 in³/lb), and the tool shows the volumetric weight, the chargeable weight, and which figure would be billed. This is an educational estimate: carriers differ in divisor, rounding, and measurement, so your carrier’s figure may differ. Nothing you enter is uploaded or stored.

How to use this tool

  1. 01Choose units and enter the actual weightPick metric (cm/kg) or imperial (in/lb), then enter the parcel’s actual scale weight.
  2. 02Enter the box dimensions and divisorType the length, width, and height of the outer box, and pick a divisor (a preset or your carrier’s value).
  3. 03Read the chargeable weightThe tool shows the chargeable weight (the greater of actual and volumetric), the volumetric weight, and which one would be billed.

Examples

  • A light, bulky parcelActual 2 kg; box 40 × 30 × 20 cm at 5000 → volumetric 4.8 kg. Chargeable weight = 4.8 kg, billed by volumetric weight.
  • A dense parcelActual 9 kg; same box at 6000 → volumetric 4.0 kg. Chargeable weight = 9 kg, billed by actual weight.
  • A tieIf actual and volumetric are equal, the chargeable weight equals both; the tool labels it as billed by actual weight.
  • Why carriers use chargeable weight

Space on a vehicle or plane is limited, so carriers charge for whichever is larger, the weight on the scale or the space the parcel takes (its volumetric weight). Reducing empty space in your packaging lowers the volumetric weight and can lower the chargeable weight.

  • Sources and limitations

This tool is an educational estimate and is not affiliated with any carrier. Divisors (5000, 6000, 139, 166) are common industry values, but each carrier and service sets its own divisor, rounding, and measurement rules, which can change. Check your carrier’s current documentation before relying on a figure.

Frequently asked questions

What is chargeable weight?

Chargeable (billable) weight is the greater of a parcel’s actual weight and its volumetric weight. Carriers bill this figure so bulky-but-light parcels pay for the space they use.

How is chargeable weight calculated?

Compute volumetric weight = (length × width × height) ÷ divisor, then take the larger of that and the actual weight. The larger value is the chargeable weight.

What is the difference between actual and volumetric weight?

Actual weight is what the scale reads. Volumetric weight reflects the space the parcel occupies. Carriers charge whichever is greater.

How can I reduce my chargeable weight?

Use a smaller or better-fitting box to cut the volume, which lowers the volumetric weight. If the actual weight is already higher, a smaller box will not reduce the charge.

Does this match my carrier exactly?

Not necessarily. It is an educational estimate. Carriers differ in divisor, rounding, and measurement, so verify with your carrier.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded, saved, or shared.
