The Japan Tax-Free Calculator helps tourists estimate the consumption tax on a purchase and what tax-free shopping would save. Enter the item price, say whether that price already includes tax, and pick the rate: 10% is the standard consumption tax and 8% is the reduced rate that applies to some food and drink. If the shop and the purchase qualify for tax-free, the tool shows the price you would pay without tax and the amount saved, which is the tax portion. If the purchase is not eligible, it shows the tax-inclusive price you would pay instead. Everything runs in your browser with nothing stored, and there is no live currency conversion, so the figures stay in yen. This is an estimate to help you plan, not official tax advice. Eligibility, exclusions, and the paperwork are set by the retailer and the authorities, so confirm the current rules in store before you rely on a number.

How to use this tool

  1. 01Enter the item priceType the price shown on the tag or receipt in yen. The tool needs a positive amount before it can estimate anything.
  2. 02Say if the price includes taxChoose Tax-included if the shelf price already has consumption tax in it, or Tax-excluded if the price is before tax.
  3. 03Pick the tax rateUse 10% for the standard rate, 8% for the reduced rate on some food and drink, or Custom to type another rate.
  4. 04Set eligibilityTurn on tax-free eligible if the store and purchase qualify. Tax-free generally needs at least 5,000 yen before tax at one store on the same day.
  5. 05Read and copy the estimateSee the amount saved, the tax, the tax-free price, and the price with tax. Copy the summary to compare shops or plan a budget.

When is this useful?

  • Planning a big electronics buyCheck how much the consumption tax adds to a camera or console, and what a tax-free purchase would take off the price.
  • Splitting food and general goodsSnacks and drinks can fall under the 8% reduced rate, while general goods use 10%. Estimate each with the right rate.
  • Hitting the tax-free minimumSee whether combining items to reach 5,000 yen before tax at one store is worth it for the saving.
  • Comparing shop pricesSome tags show tax-included and some show tax-excluded. Convert either way so you compare like with like.
03

Examples

  • Tax-included 30,000 yen at 10%A 30,000 yen tax-inclusive price contains about 2,727 yen of tax, so the tax-free price is about 27,273 yen and you save the tax.
  • Tax-excluded 10,000 yen at 10%A 10,000 yen pre-tax price adds 1,000 yen of tax for an 11,000 yen total. Tax-free, you pay 10,000 yen and save 1,000 yen.
  • Reduced 8% on foodA 1,000 yen pre-tax snack at the 8% reduced rate adds 80 yen of tax, for a tax-inclusive price of 1,080 yen.
04

Tips for a better result

  • Check tax-included vs tax-excludedJapanese price tags may show either. Picking the wrong mode is the most common reason an estimate looks off.
  • Use 8% only where it appliesThe reduced rate covers some food and non-alcoholic drink for takeaway. General goods and dining in usually use 10%.
  • Watch the store minimumTax-free shopping generally needs 5,000 yen or more before tax at one store on the same day. Small buys may not qualify.
  • Bring your passportTax-free purchases are for eligible short-term visitors and normally require your passport at the register or a tax-free counter.
05

How the estimate works

The rate is a percentage of the pre-tax price. When the price already includes tax, the tool divides by one plus the rate to find the net price, and the difference is the tax. When the price is before tax, it multiplies by the rate to find the tax and adds it for the tax-inclusive price. If the purchase is tax-free eligible, the price you pay is the net price and the amount saved is the tax. If it is not eligible, you pay the tax-inclusive price and save nothing. Figures are shown in yen with no currency conversion.

06

Inputs, outputs, and assumptions

Inputs are the item price, whether that price includes tax, the tax rate, and whether the purchase is tax-free eligible. Outputs are the net price, the consumption tax, the tax-inclusive price, the tax-free price, and the amount saved. The tool assumes a single rate applies to the whole amount you enter and that the eligibility you select is correct. It does not decide eligibility for you, apply store minimums automatically, or model refund handling fees.

07

Modes and scenarios

Use Tax-included when the tag or receipt price already contains consumption tax, which is common in Japan, and Tax-excluded when a price is quoted before tax. Choose 10% for standard goods, 8% for qualifying food and drink, or Custom for any other rate. Toggle eligibility to compare paying tax against a tax-free purchase, so you can see both the amount saved and the price with tax side by side.

08

Sources and current rules

Consumption tax and the tax-free shopping program are set by the Japan National Tax Agency and the official Japan tax-free shopping scheme. As current as of July 2026, the standard consumption tax is 10%, with a reduced 8% rate on some food and drink, and tax-free shopping generally requires spending 5,000 yen or more before tax at one store on the same day. Forward note: from 1 November 2026 Japan is scheduled to move to a refund-at-airport model, where shoppers pay the tax-inclusive price in store and claim a refund on departure, so travelers should verify the current rules before shopping. This tool is an estimate and not tax advice, and eligibility, exclusions, and procedures are set by the retailer and the authorities.

09

Limitations and common mistakes

The estimate is only as good as your inputs. The most common mistakes are mixing up tax-included and tax-excluded prices, using 8% where 10% applies, and assuming any purchase qualifies for tax-free. The tool does not confirm that a shop is a licensed tax-free store, does not check the same-store same-day minimum for you, and does not account for consumable versus general-goods packaging rules or any processing fees a refund service may charge.

10

Privacy and local processing

Every calculation runs in your browser on your device. The prices and settings you enter are never uploaded, stored, or sent to analytics beyond a general usage signal, so your shopping plans stay private and closing the tab clears everything.

Frequently asked questions

What is the consumption tax rate in Japan?

The standard rate is 10%, with a reduced 8% rate on some food and drink. You can also enter a custom rate. This is current as of July 2026.

How much do I need to spend to shop tax-free?

Tax-free shopping generally requires spending 5,000 yen or more before tax at one store on the same day. The retailer sets the exact conditions.

Does a tax-included or tax-excluded price matter?

Yes. Tax-included prices already contain the tax, so the tool divides it out. Tax-excluded prices are before tax, so the tool adds it.

Is the tax-free system changing?

From 1 November 2026 Japan is scheduled to switch to a refund-at-airport model, where you pay the tax-inclusive price in store and claim a refund on departure. Verify the current rules before you shop.

Is this official tax advice?

No. It is an estimate to help you plan. Eligibility, exclusions, and procedures are set by the retailer and the authorities, so confirm in store.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded, saved, or shared, and there is no live currency conversion.
